Kit Shop

Welcome to the Clubs "Kit" page. Here you will find a brief explanation about the karate Gi (uniform) , what kit you require for class, and a list of Club clothing. Because we are a small , non-profit club we do not hold stock. We order Uniforms, Equipment, and Club clothing as it is needed/wanted throughout the year. This year we are running a "Gi Swap" program. Scroll down to "kit prices" to see details on this program.
KARATE GI
The karate uniform is called a "Gi". It consists of a white jacket, a belt and white pants. Except for the colour of the belt all karate-ka (students) wear identical uniforms. There are no fancy red, blue or green satin uniforms with elastic waist- bands. There are no names plastered across the back or sleeves. Just a small patch above the heart to signify the roots that all students have in common. It's not a boastful pride, but one of loyalty and humility for one's organization. There are many types of martial arts and most have their own uniform. Some of these are similar to the type of uniform we use, many are not. It is not appropriate to wear the uniform, belt or crest of another other school or martial art; as each will have its own history, tradition and symbolic meaning.
The practical side of the
Gi is that it is loose to allow freedom of movement. Its interwoven cotton is
strong enough to allow grappling, yet not overly heavy.
The belt, or obi in Japanese, is tied in a specific way around the waist. This
is an important part of the uniform. Not only does it signify rank, but tied
with the proper tension allows one to feel the tightening of the stomach muscle
during focus. During focus, the stomach should be pressed against the belt,
making it difficult to slip one's hand in between.

The white Gi is a symbol of purity of spirit, modesty and cleanliness.
Modesty and humility, that is what is taught and that is what is practiced.
New students are entitled to wear a Gi as soon as they begin training. However, it is not necessary to purchase a uniform immediately. Until a Gi is obtained, students should wear a plain t-shirt and sweat pants.
- the above info on the "Gi" is thanks to the ISKF Alberta website, and the Edmonton karate School website.
WHAT YOU NEED FOR CLASS
Karate is not a sport that is burdened with a lot of expensive equipment. This makes the kit's list very simple.
CHILDREN: Gi with appropriate Belt.
ADULTS : Gi with appropriate Belt, Gloves, Mouth Guard.
*Children/Youths participating in the Adult class or practicing Kumite should also have Gloves and a mouth guard.
Gloves and mouth guards are for use when practicing Kumite (sparring). They are a Safety item and although they may not always be used in class they are mandatory in competition and some testing. Advanced Karate-ka and those intermediate Karate-ka involved in sparring should have gloves and Mouth guards.

Gi Swap Program:
Many of our young Karate students out grow their Gi’s (uniform) long before they wear them out. Other people may decide to take some time off or that Karate is just not for them. If your little Martial Artist has out grown their Gi, or you have a Gi that is not being used and is still in good condition you can Consign it with us. All Gi sizes are welcome.
Simply drop off you Gi along with you Name, phone #, and price. When your Gi sells we will call you and you can come and pick up your money.
We will also gladly take Gi’s that anyone wishes to generously donate to the Club. Some of our Families have several members to outfit and costs can add up. All donated Gi’s will be donated back out to club members.
Gi’s can be dropped off at the Mackenzie River School gym: Monday and Wednesday: 6pm – 9pm
GLOVES:

Gloves will range in price from $25 -$35 depending on the brand and quantity that the club orders. Gloves come in sizes: Sm, M, L, XL, XXL.

Mouth guards are not purchased by the club. This is an item that must be obtained personally. They may be purchased at any sports store. Many Dental Plans allow for one Free, custom fitted, mouth guard a year. These mouth guards tend to fit more comfortably. Check with your Dentist and Dental Plan for details. Your choice of mouth guard is one of personal preference.
Prices range from: "free" depending on your dental plan to $25 from a sporting goods store and anywhere in between
